25 Doubs

Region: Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

Bordering Switzerland, Doubs is a department of alpine valleys, dense forests, and serene waterways. It combines mountainous terrain with a deep industrial and cultural history, particularly in watchmaking and precision craftsmanship.

The capital, Besançon, lies in a horseshoe bend of the Doubs River, watched over by Vauban’s mighty citadel. It’s a green, vibrant city full of history and student life. Montbéliard offers a mix of Germanic and French architecture, while Pontarlier, Baume-les-Dames, and Morteau reflect the rural traditions of the Jura mountains.

The Doubs Valley, Saut du Doubs waterfall, and Jura ridges are perfect for hiking and cycling. In winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are popular in the Haut-Doubs. The department is also part of the Comté cheeseroute, with dairies and mountain pastures shaping the landscape and diet.

Homes here include chalets, stone farmhouses, village properties, and town apartments in Besançon or Montbéliard. It’s an appealing destination for those who love nature, seasons, and outdoor life with a touch of alpine culture.
